Architecting Resilient PWA Offline Experiences with Service Workers
How to design a hybrid caching strategy that preserves critical portfolio snapshots and custom offline fallback states without caching dynamic admin routes.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) bridge the gap between static websites and native applications. However, an aggressive caching policy can cause stale content bugs or even cache sensitive authenticated views.
The Hybrid Tiered Caching Model
Our architecture divides assets into three distinct tiers:
- App Shell & Static Assets: CacheFirst strategy ensures instant rendering of CSS, JS bundles, fonts, and icons.
- Public Dynamic Content: NetworkFirst with Cache Fallback allows visitors to read previously visited blog posts and project details even when their internet connection drops.
- Admin & Auth Isolation: Explicitly routed to NetworkOnly to prevent any sensitive data from lingering in CacheStorage.
When combined with a dedicated custom offline page, visitors receive a polished, informative offline experience instead of a generic browser dinosaur error.
